Cohorta

Terms of Service

Version 3.1 - published 2 October 2026

If you accept this version (3.1) when you sign up, these Terms apply from that day. If you signed up under an earlier version, they apply from 16 October 2026 or from the day you accept them in the app, whichever is later. Until then, the version you agreed to still applies.

1. Advertising and personal data

We do not advertise to you. There are no adverts anywhere in Cohorta. We do not sell advertising space, and we do not let anyone else promote their products to you through the Service. The only marketing we send is email about Cohorta itself, and you can unsubscribe (section 18).

We do not sell your personal data. We never have and we will not. We do not share it with data brokers, advertisers or anyone else who wants to market to you. The only people and companies who ever see your data are set out in our Privacy Policy: the suppliers who help us run Cohorta, the members of your own group, your group's owner in the limited way described in section 15, and the authorities where the law requires it.

We use analytics. We measure how Cohorta is used so we can improve it and keep it secure. Analytics cookies and similar identifiers run only if you agree. That is not advertising, and we do not sell that data either. Our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy explain what we collect and the choices you have.

Cohorta is paid for by one simple subscription.

2. About these Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and Cohorta Ltd governing your use of the Cohorta app and service ("Service"). You accept these Terms in the app, on the dates set out above.

If you do not want to accept them, you can delete your account in the app instead.

Our Privacy Policy, our Community Standards and our Refund & Cancellation Policy also apply and form part of these Terms.

3. Who we are

Cohorta is provided and sold by Cohorta Ltd, registered office 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX, United Kingdom (company number 17376110). Cohorta Ltd is the company you contract with, and has been since Cohorta began. Contact: support@cohorta.me.

4. Eligibility (18+)

You must be aged 18 or over and able to enter a legally binding contract. The Service is strictly for adults. As well as confirming your date of birth, you complete an age check with our age-assurance provider, Yoti. Cohorta is currently invite-only, so joining also requires a group code from your community.

If we find that a member is under 18, we delete their account immediately and refund any payments they have made. We may also refuse or end access if we believe you have given us false information about your age.

5. The Service

Cohorta lets you create a profile, discover and connect with other members of your community group, express interest ("likes"), message members you have matched with, take part in your group's chat, and see events your community has published.

We provide the Service with reasonable care and skill, but we do not guarantee that it will always be available or error-free. We may change, add or remove features, and pause the Service for maintenance. If we permanently remove a major feature that you are paying for, you may cancel your subscription.

6. Your account and keeping it secure

You must give accurate information, keep your sign-in details secure, and not share your account with anyone. You are responsible for what happens through your account, unless it happened because our own security failed. Tell us promptly at support@cohorta.me if you think someone else has used it.

7. Subscriptions, pricing and payment

  • Cohorta Ltd is the seller of all subscriptions and paid access, and "Cohorta" is the name that appears on your card statement.
  • Cohorta membership is a single monthly subscription: £4.99 per month after your free period, including VAT where applicable. There is only one membership; you buy Cohorta, not a group, and you are never charged twice.
  • If you were a member before subscriptions started, you get 14 days free from the day you subscribe, with your first payment on day 15. New joiners get 30 days free from sign-up, with their first payment on day 31.
  • A subscription is required for existing members from 16 October 2026; check the date in the email we sent you. If you do not subscribe, you cannot use Cohorta until you do; nothing is deleted.
  • You are not charged when you sign up. You give us a payment method at sign-up through Stripe, our payment processor, but no money is taken then. We will never take a payment from you sooner than 14 days after you subscribe.
  • The price, the date your free period ends and the date of your first payment are shown to you plainly when you subscribe, and are in your account afterwards.
  • The free period applies once per person (first-time customers only). If you had a free period before and come back to Cohorta, you still will not be charged for at least 14 days.
  • Cancel during your free period and you are never charged.
  • Unless you cancel before your free period ends, your paid subscription begins and the monthly fee is charged. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until you cancel. We remind you 3 days before your first payment, by email, and in the app and by push where you have them turned on. We also send you renewal reminders before your subscription renews.
  • We may change the price. If we do, we will tell you at least 30 days beforehand, and you are free to cancel before the new price applies.
  • There is no App Store or Google Play billing. Stripe is our only payment route.

8. If a payment fails

If a monthly payment fails, we retry it, and we pause your access to Cohorta while your subscription is unpaid. You keep access to the parts of the Service you need to resolve the issue: your account, your billing details and support.

Our payment provider will retry the payment up to eight times over about two weeks after the first failure. You can update your payment details at any time during that period and your access resumes. If the payment still has not gone through by the end of it, your subscription ends.

9. Cancelling, cooling-off and refunds

You can cancel at any time, from your account on the Cohorta website; there is a link to it in the app. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and your access continues to the end of the month you have already paid for.

Your statutory cooling-off right. Cohorta is a service, and as a UK consumer buying a service at a distance you have a legal right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 to cancel this contract within 14 days of the day you subscribe (for new joiners, the day you sign up), without giving a reason. You cannot give that right up, and we will never ask you to. You can ask us to start the Service straight away, and we do; that is how you can use Cohorta from the moment you join.

Existing members get 14 days free from subscribing and new joiners get 30 days free from sign-up. Because we take no payment for at least 14 days, a member who cancels inside the cooling-off period has paid nothing and there is nothing to refund.

You can cancel using any clear statement, including the model cancellation form in our Refund & Cancellation Policy.

Refunds after that. Once the 14 days have passed, we do not give refunds beyond what the law requires. If you cancel part-way through a month you keep your access until the end of that month, and the month is not refunded.

Refunds are handled by Cohorta Ltd in line with our Refund & Cancellation Policy and your legal rights.

10. Community rules

You must use the Service lawfully and respectfully and follow our Community Standards, which set out in full what is not allowed, including illegal, harmful, harassing, hateful, sexual or exploitative content, impersonation, scams and misuse of other members' information.

Cohorta decides what breaks the rules. We apply the Community Standards ourselves, consistently, and we will tell you which rule you have broken if we act on your account. We operate reporting and moderation in line with our duties under the Online Safety Act 2023.

11. Messages, group chats and moderation

Cohorta has two kinds of conversation, with different privacy and moderation arrangements.

  • One-to-one messages between matched members are private. We do not read them and we do not scan them. The only time anyone at Cohorta sees a one-to-one message is when somebody in that conversation reports it to us; then we look at what was reported so we can take appropriate action.
  • Group chats and event board chats are open. They are visible to Cohorta and they are moderated. We use automated checking to flag messages that may break our Community Standards. A person always decides what happens next: nobody is banned, and no content is removed, on the basis of an automated check alone.

We can remove any message that breaks the rules. You can always tell which kind of conversation you are in from the app.

There are no photos or files in any conversation on Cohorta. The only images on the platform are profile photos.

12. Reporting, appeals and complaints

You can report a member or content in the app: tap the member's avatar, then Report profile. You choose a reason:

  1. Fake profile or pretending to be someone
  2. Harassment, abuse or hate
  3. Sexual or explicit content
  4. Sharing an intimate image of me without consent
  5. Scam or asking for money
  6. They seem to be under 18
  7. Something that happened off the app
  8. Something else

Every report goes to Cohorta Support. Group owners and community organisers never receive reports, never see who made one, and never see the evidence. Reports involving a child, and reports of an intimate image shared without consent, go to the top of our queue; where the law requires it we report content to the National Crime Agency.

You can appeal, and appeals are decided by a person. Reply to the message we send you, or email support@cohorta.me. You can appeal if we act on your account, if we take down something you posted, or if you think we have not acted on a report you made. If we act on your account we will tell you why and how to appeal. Our response times and the full complaints route are on our Reporting & Complaints page.

13. Bans and ending your account

  • You can delete your account at any time from the app.
  • We can end your access. If you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, the Community Standards or the law, we may ban you. A ban takes effect immediately: your access ends at once and your subscription is cancelled, so it does not renew again. The month you are in is not refunded, except where the law requires it.
  • We may also close an account for any other reason by giving you 30 days' notice.
  • Whatever the reason, we will tell you that we have done it, why, and how to appeal.
  • Some parts of these Terms carry on after your account ends, for example money owed, liability and governing law.

If you break the rules, the only actions we take are to warn you, act on your content, or ban you. This is separate from your access being paused while you have no active subscription or a payment is unpaid (sections 7 and 8).

14. Groups

The Service is organised around community groups.

We can remove a member from a group, close a group, or merge two groups, either because the group's owner asks us to, or on our own judgement. We will always tell the members affected. If the only group you belong to closes, we will give you notice and you may cancel your subscription.

15. What your group's owner can see and do

The person who owns your community group is not Cohorta staff, and they do not have access to our systems. To run their own community, they are given your display name, your profile photo and your full email address — and nothing else — for the members of their own group only.

We send that list to them by email, outside the app, and we will tell you before your details are sent for the first time. People who have left the group are not in the list.

They use it to confirm that people belong to their group, and to tell us whether someone asking to join should be let in; the decision is ours, not theirs. Their agreement with us says they may not use your email address for marketing, may not share or forward the list, and must delete it once they have finished the check.

We may ask an owner about a specific member where there is a concern about behaviour. If we do, we give them the member's name and the general concern, never who reported them, and never the evidence.

An owner never sees your dating preference or orientation, your messages, who has reported anyone, the contents of any report, or anything at all about members of other groups. An owner cannot ban you. Cohorta makes every decision about your account, and you always have the right to appeal to us.

16. Events, meeting people, and your own safety

Cohorta lists events, which are run by their organisers, and members are responsible for their own conduct. We are not the organiser, promoter or host of any event, we do not run them, and we are not responsible for them.

You meet other members at your own risk. Cohorta does not vet members' character or background. Beyond our 18+ age check we carry out no identity or criminal record checks, and we cannot tell you that any member is safe. Take sensible precautions: meet in public, tell someone where you will be, and trust your instincts.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not responsible for the conduct of members, online or offline, or for any event or meeting arranged through or alongside the Service. Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your statutory consumer rights (see section 20).

17. Your profile photo and the things you post

You keep ownership of everything you post. You grant Cohorta a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display, moderate and remove that content inside Cohorta, in order to run the Service. That licence does not make it ours.

We will never use your photo or your words in advertising or promotion without asking you separately and getting your agreement.

You are responsible for what you post and confirm you have the right to share it. We may remove anything that breaks the rules.

18. Emails we send you

  • Service emails. We send you emails you need in order to use Cohorta: about your account, your billing, your safety, and changes to these Terms. These are part of the Service and you cannot turn them off while you have an account. They are never selling you anything.
  • Marketing emails. We may email you about Cohorta's own service. Every one has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops them. We never send you anybody else's promotions, and we do not market to people who are not members without their consent.

19. How we match and suggest people

Discover uses your preferences and your activity to suggest members and events automatically. You can change your preferences at any time.

Decisions that seriously affect you, such as banning you, are never made by software alone. A person decides, and you can appeal to a person.

20. Our liability

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or your statutory rights.

We are also not able to limit our liability for fraud. Subject to that, our total liability to you in connection with the Service is limited to the total amount you have paid us, and we are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable to both of us when the contract was made.

21. Your privacy and how long we keep your data

We process your personal data as described in our Privacy Policy.

When you delete your account, we delete your data after a three-month safety window (up to two years if the account was banned), except what we have to keep: payment records for six years (a tax requirement), and safety and moderation records for as long as we need them to protect members and meet our record-keeping duties under the Online Safety Act. We do not keep everything just in case. The full periods are in section 8 of the Privacy Policy.

22. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. Small changes take effect straight away. We define small changes as only these: correcting a typographical error, and wording changes that do not alter your rights, the price, or what you get. Nothing else is a small change.

For anything significant, we give you notice before the change applies to you, and you are free to cancel before it does. The notice you get is 30 days, less the time you have already been with Cohorta, and never less than 14 days. So a brand-new member gets a full 30 days; a member who joined five days ago gets 25; and anyone who has been with us for a month or more gets 14. A price change always gets at least 30 days' notice (section 7).

Where the change is significant we will also ask you to accept the new Terms in the app before you carry on using Cohorta.

23. Complaints and contact

If something goes wrong, email support@cohorta.me, or see our Reporting & Complaints page, which sets out how to complain, what happens next and how to appeal a decision.

24. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you keep the right to bring proceedings in your own local courts, and the protections of your local law.

25. General

We may transfer these Terms to a successor company, but only where doing so does not reduce your rights. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest stand.

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, Community Standards and Refund & Cancellation Policy, are the whole of our agreement with you, except that nothing here prevents you relying on anything we have told you fraudulently or misleadingly.

Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver.
